Finding the right cycling shoe can be more difficult than finding the right running shoe, and more expensive. Many run too narrow which can cause a variety of foot problems. Triathlon shoes also must have unique design elements to accommodate wet feet, barefoot comfort, transitions, and running off the bike.
The Shimano TR1 seems to get it all right, even though it is not the most expensive shoe on the market. They start with a solid carbon fiber sole for optimal power transfer and mate it to a light upper. It closes with a single strap that fastens to the inside for on the bike removal of your foot. The only issue I had with this system is the end contacted the crank arm after a few uses but this was quickly resolved by cutting the end of the strap off (it seemed to be designed for this).
Comfort was excellent. I have observed the shoe accommodate a range of foot widths and the toe box is large enough not to compress your foot. The interior is well configured for avoiding the “hot spots” of barefoot riding. The shoe has a heel loop for assisting quick removal and a rubber grip on the heel for the same purpose. There are build ups on the heel and toe for walking / running off the bike. Drain ports in the side and forefoot do an adequate job.
The TR02 is not a highly vented shoe however, especially in the toe. I have ridden with shoes that are vented in the toe box and forefoot area that keep the foot exceptionally dry. This works against you in cold weather riding, but in warm weather your foot receives a constant air flow to all areas. With this exception the TR02 is a tremendous value.
