Some athletes are now adjusting their diets to consume mainly fat in a period of a few days to a week prior to carbo-loading. This is in an effort to get the body to utilize more fat as a fuel source and spare precious glycogen stores.
Because this higher than necessary consumption of protein can offset the intake of other essential energy nutrients (carbohydrates), it is not surprising that many athletes struggle with low energy during a work out. Ironically, endurance athletes require almost as much protein as body builders for their normal training.
