Each full Ironman event presents an award for the "everday hero." These athletes have demonstrated significant contribution to a charity, organization, or person, while balancing the rigorous training for an Ironman event. For those who know Jen Henry personally, the recognition is a small thank you for the dedication and sacrifice she has continually demonstrated over the years. Jen is the Ford Ironman Everyday Hero for Ironman Louisville.
As her coach, I have often said that Jen is “the hardest working girl in showbiz.” If you need something done, you ask Jen. In fact, her inability to say no is probably her biggest character flaw. Jen is a physical therapist and uses water therapy to rehabilitate children with brain injuries. She has organized events for kids with special needs such as the Kool Kidz Triathlon, swim team, and helps put on a summer camp each year. She is a dedicated coach for The Sport Factory, and has helped guide many athletes to their triathlon goals up to the Ironman distance.
When I had an idea to start a non-profit organization, later to be called My First Bike, Jen and her husband Curtis were the first two people I consulted. The purpose of My First Bike is to raise money to purchase adaptive bicycles for kids with special needs, giving them an opportunity for freedom, exercise, and rehabilitation. Within a few weeks and with the help of our action committee, we had our charity off the ground. Jen of course took the lead on getting the application process structured and was/is instrumental in the often daunting process of starting a non-profit.
Jen may have a heart of gold but she is tough as nails when it comes to her training and racing. She has won many age group finishes in her 15 years of competitive experience and has received an Honorable Mention ranking from USA Triathlon. Most recently she has raced adventure races up to 12 hours and placed 5th overall in her first Xterra off road triathlon.
With the Everyday Hero award comes $1000 check to the charity of Jen's choice. Her donation to My First Bike raises the remaining funding we needed to purchase and donate our first bike to a worthy recipient. Jen also receives a free entry into any Ironman race.
Thank you Jen from all the people you have touched with your hard work, sacrifice, and dedication. You are truly an "Everyday Hero."
