Vicki Cherry has followed a fairly typical athletic progression, stepping from one challenge to the next and becoming an incredible athlete along the way. Always athletic, Vicki started her endurance sport career with Team in Training in 2001. Her goal was completing a marathon, but, more importantly, to honor her son Reese, a leukemia survivor. This got her pursuing marathon PR's until she tried her first triathlon and become hooked on two sports.
Training for sprint triathlons while trying to qualify for the Boston marathon is a slippery slope, so she sought the assistance of Coach Jon Adamson to put a multi-disciplinary training plan together. He helped organize her race season, prioritize her events, and put a cohesive plan together. They have worked together for over four years and Vicki has achieved her goal of qualifying and racing the Boston Marathon, as well as success at every triathlon distance from sprint to Ironman. “Jon has done a great job of keeping me healthy and managing my wide-ranging goals” says Vicki. She may even take a run at Xterra next year.
What is Vicki's greatest athletic moment? “In June of this year, with the help of Jon's expert knowledge and individual attention I was able to cross the finish line at Ironman Coeur d'Alene. With my family in hand, Mike Riley announced to my sons “You guys should be really proud. Your Mom's an Ironman”.”
Vicki calls her husband of 17 years, Bill, the “enabler” of her triathlon habit. With the support of Bill and her two sons Reese (14) and Warren (10), Vicki will continue setting and achieving new goals for years to come. She is especially pleased with the example it sets for her boys. “I love what it teaches them without me having to say a word.”
